Library Enters the Technology Age

The library committee has begun Phase 2 of the Improvement Plan for the school library's book and media collections.  Last school year, it was determined that a study needed to be made of our current collection and a determination made of how to best improve, round out, organize, and maintain our collection for maximum effectiveness.  The decision was made that our books need to be categorized into the Dewey Decimal System, and that a card catalogue should be developed.

A software program, ResourceMate 3.0 Plus was recommended and purchased.  ResourceMate allows all materials to be entered into the data base, will search the Library of Congress for card catalogue information already available by use of the ISBN number, import the information into our data base, download the Dewey Decimal classification into the Data Base, and is able to print the spine labels to place on each book.  Additionally, bar codes have been purchased to place on each item, and a seperate series of bar codes for patrons of the library.  ResourceMate allows for the entry of both items and the checking out and in of all materials for management of our collection.  This system operates just like what you see in a Public Library.  Currently, we do not have a bar code scanner, but the addition of one down the line will make this whole process a lot smoother to work with.

On Thursday, October 18th, the members of the Library Committee met and had a hands-on demonstration of the software and practiced entering materials in.  They will now be continuing to add materials as time allows.  While this will be a timely project, the addition of this software makes this project feasible for a school our size.  There have been very few books that have not already been able to found on the Library of Congress web-site.

Phase 3 of the project will be to organize the books on the shelves in actual Dewey Decimal format.  Phase 4 will be to maintain the collection in proper order.  (This phase will include teaching Librarian skills to each of the students.)  Phase 5 will include going back through each book and determining the reading level of each book and entering that information in.  Phases 1 and 2 will continue to be ongoing.

The Library Committee wishes to thank everyone who has been helping with the growth of our collection.  Many wonderful books have been added over the summer.  There are many more that we need to be working on, and use of this program will help us best determine what areas are still needing growth.
